Founded in Munich, Germany in 1989, EPCOS was originally an independent company that focused on the development and manufacturing of electronic components, particularly passive components like capacitors, inductors, and sensors. In 2008, the TDK Corporation, a Japanese multinational electronics company, acquired EPCOS. After the acquisition, EPCOS continued to operate under its own name for a few years. However, in 2016, TDK rebranded EPCOS as part of its own electronics division, naming it TDK Electronics. Despite the rebranding, many products continue to carry the EPCOS branding alongside the TDK name. Today, TDK Electronics is the official name of the division that encompasses the former EPCOS products and technologies. EPCOS is essentially a sub-brand of TDK Electronics, focused on high-quality passive components.
